Are you in a phase where things seem to dwindle down? Do you suffer from a post vacation crash? Feeling anxious over a big business deal, a job interview or a new venture? Or do you simply want to feel desirable and plans to have that sexy night escapade with your other half? Sandalwood candles are known to be invigorating and famous for its aphrodisiac effect. Aside from its calming scent, the flickering of light against a dark back-draft eases the mind and, when feeling naughty, unleashes the tigress or tiger in you.

Without further ado, here are simple sandalwood candle-making tips to inspire you:

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 pound of beeswax
  • sandalwood essential oil (or fragrance oil, whichever you prefer)
  • essential oil of your choice (jasmine, ylang-ylang, patchouli, etc — optional)
  • thick candlewick (with tab)
  • pudding mold (tea cups, recyclable miniature jars, whatever mold you prefer)
  • double boiler
  • silicone spray
  • broomstick, hairpin or any thin material to hold the wick

Instructions:

1. Break 1-pound of beeswax into tiny pieces. Put them inside a stainless steel (preferably, non-stick) double boiler to melt. For best results and minimum burning, keep heat under medium flame and wait until all the wax therein is completely melted with a consistent texture.

2. While waiting for the beeswax to melt, prepare the pudding mold. Wash and dry it carefully then, spray the inner surface with silicone. Why silicone spray, you may ask? Well, silicone spray is water resistant and can protect candles from moisture.

3. Prepare the wick by dipping it into the melted wax. Using the tab, carefully fix it right at the bottom of your choice of mold. Make sure to attach the other free end to a holder (broomstick or hairpin or piece of wire). Make sure the skewer is carefully balanced, straight and centered across the top of the mold. A challenging part but doable, nonetheless.

4. Once the desired melted consistency of the beeswax is reached, remove the double boiler from the flame. Add 30 drops of sandalwood oil (10 drops only if using sandalwood fragrance oil) as soon as temperature is at 110-140 degrees F. Add all other choices of essential oil but, at least, minimize it into 2-3 essential oils at 10 drops each.

5. Slowly and carefully pour the melted wax mixed with essential oils and sandalwood oil into the mold’s top edge. This will prevent bubbles from forming. When using jars and other breakable materials, it is important to make sure that the reconstituted wax reaches 110 degrees F and to “warm” them up in the oven or via a hair dryer to prevent these molds from cracking. Set aside on a cool metal surface for cooling.

Bonus tip: To form a central cavity, quickly pour out the liquid wax left at the small area on the center of the mold. The sides usually cool faster.

6. Trim the wick to a quarter of an inch. A lengthier wick usually overexposes a candle making the flame ragged and unsteady. It can also bring out smoke and, most importantly, easily melting the candle shortchanging your enjoyment.

7. Feel free to use and enjoy.

Truly, it is easier to just grab and buy aromatic sandalwood candles from a nearby specialty shop. However, none can certainly match the fulfillment of creating something from scratch. Not only will home-made candle-making create specific moods you want, it can also be a frugal (and thoughtful) way of giving presents.
